About WG2.8
The Working Group consists of around 40 members, who meet every 10 months or so to discuss every aspect of functional programming. Our interests span Haskell, ML, Scheme, you name it, and range from type theory to garbage collection. Our meetings are informal and fun, without a fixed program or proceedings: an opportunity to discuss work in progress, and to start new collaborations.

Format
The meeting programme is decided dynamically, and slots are flexible to allow discussions to run their course. Come prepared to speak for 20-30 minutes on your latest research. A punchy 30 minute talk that sparks a 30 minute discussion is appreciated much more than a one hour monologue. We also welcome 5-minute talks, with a strict two slide limit: an excellent way to introduce a problem.

Location

The next meeting will be held in Las Vegas. Although known primarily for gambling and entertainment, Las Vegas is close to many of the best outdoor recreation areas in the western US.

Before or after the meeting you can visit some of the best places in the southwest:

  • The Grand Canyon
  • Death Valley
  • Zion National Park
  • Bryce Canyon
  • Mustang Ranch

Dates
The meeting begins with a reception on the evening of Sunday, March 3rd, and ends after lunch on Friday, the 8th.

Booking a room:

Book your room directly with Alexis Park by calling them at 1-800-582-2228. Please indicate that you are attending the wg2.8 meeting. Although the Alexis Park web site allows you to book a room there for less than the $129 a night guaranteed for the meeting, an online booking will not count toward our obligation to fill a specific number of rooms at Alexis Park and in fact does not even guarantee your room will actually be at the Alexis Park (read the fine print!).

Registering:

Please register before February 8.

The registration fee is $400 and includes breakfast and lunch each day as well as all but 2 dinners. The hotel will charge $660 (maximum) per person for a 5 night stay in a large, well furnished room. Dinner on Tuesday and Wednesday and lunch on Friday are not included in the registration..

Alexis Park Resort

We will be meeting in a resort immediately adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip. Alexis Park is close to the airport and within walking distance of some of the biggest casinos. It is a gambling-free resort, offering peace and quiet not found at the big casinos.

Activities

We have two group activities planned. On Thursday (March 7) we will have a banquet at the Luxor casino and then see the Blue Man Group. This is included in the registration cost.

We will also take a day to explore the desert around Las Vegas. Details will be decided at the meeting.
