Jurmo

July 13, 2002.
We travel with Leila's mum to their summer cottage. It is on an island called Jurmo, located in the Finnish Archipelago (northern Baltic). We spend a few days there.

Once a year the local parish priest shows up to give a service and today was the day. He also oversaw observances relating to a recent funeral. Afterwards we went to a gathering of "the four families" (Leila can trace her lineage to two of the four original families which have inhabited Jurmo for several hundred years) for afternoon coffee and cakes. Later in the day Leila and I went for a walk.

The next day a cousin of Leila's, Anton Johansson, took us to a nearby island (Huvudskär) for some bouldering. For the photos of that little adventure, go HERE. I did take two, non-climbing-related photos later in the day.

On our last day we just walked around hunting for cloudberrys and exploring Anneli's forest (Leila's sister, Anneli, has been entrusted with the ecological health of Jurmo's small forest, planted 80 years earlier by one of their ancestors). We then embarked on the long trip back to Porvoo.
