A Model of Music Comprehension

Authors:

Paul Hudak

Abstract:

The work described in this thesis is a result of two stages of research. The first stage involved investigating a person's musical/perceptual processes in an environment intended to allow only musical features to influence the listener. The goal was to arrive at a reasonable theory of the operation of these cognitive processes, a theory which should eventually provide a more thorough description of music than that provided by traditional analysis. The second stage of research was concerned with writing a program called MUSIC, which "listens" to a tune by making use of the musical relationships discovered in stage one. The program is organized around a system of "demons," a familiar conceptual tool used in Artificial Intelligence research.
